About The Artwork

Currently submitted to an exclusive exhibition, please contact if interested in purchase. *Dimensions listed include frame* The theme this piece is one of true courage and steadfastness, traditionally masculine and martial qualities. This is communicated not through a 'warrior' image but though an arguably vulnerable subject having stood up against an oppressing force and prevailing without necessarily using violent means. The composition is intended to make the female subject appear diminutive and of her own mind through the costuming and the placement of vacant space above her. Details like the tattoo which reads 'Eddie Lives,' a reference to the band Iron Maiden, allows us to delve further into the subject's character. The scarring, rather than painting her as a victim, is simply evidence of her standing against a force. Interestingly, this is essentially an image of a strong woman as created by a male artist, which with the slightly sexualised element and scarring is perhaps quite different to how a female artist might have depicted a similar idea. This perhaps raises a debate about how the male and female ideas of femininity and strength come together.

Largely lacking formal training as an Artist, Huck has spent years studying the principles of visual art as well as learning techniques from other Artists that inspire him. This freedom has allowed him to readily adopt tried and tested methods, as well as find which principles he would deviate from to develop his craft and style. The purpose behind Huck’s work is to explore and challenge archetypes (like the Hero or the Maiden) that are shared among different cultures regardless of barriers like geography or ideology. He is especially inspired by how these cultural or mythological images can be worked to transcend boundaries between viewers. Huck focuses on specific aspects of these common archetypes, such as the nature of masculinity as found in a hero/ warrior figure. His work often takes aim at these traditions, whether through humour or by darker means. In terms of style, Huck is drawn to figurative realism and symbolism. True representation of nature has not been emulated in his work however, as he has come to favour more of a loose approach in technique, often using impasto alongside glazes, as well as indulging in exaggeration of colour and shadow in much of his work.
