About The Artwork

What is death? No breath, no life, no hope, no future. Life cannot come from me because I am birthed in brokenness and sin. I have to dive deep, beyond my own capabilities. I have to swim where I cannot stand, deep dark black waters. Only when I give up when I blow out my breath can I take in the breath of life. I die and then I live! Many cultures associate the butterfly with our souls. The Christian religion sees the butterfly as a symbol of resurrection. Around the world, people view the butterfly as representing endurance, change, hope, and life. Also, if the butterfly is a symbol of a coming change or transformation, its symbolism depends on the colour of this butterfly. Gold symbolises the purity of the spiritual aspect of “All That Is”. It is symbolic of spirituality and development in the realm of complete understanding, allowing one to both attain and maintain communion with the source of all being. Gold has been called “the master healer”. Blue is the third primary colour. It spiritually signifies the Healing Power of God. It is the most sublime subject and colour which represents, biblically, the Word of God. … The very fact that the Sky is blue stands for the presence of God. Blue also represents meanings of depth, trust, loyalty, sincerity, wisdom, confidence, stability, faith, heaven, and intelligence. Water popularly represents life. It can be associated with birth, fertility, and refreshment. In a Christian context, water has many correlations. … Christians are baptized with or in water, symbolizing a purification of the soul, and admission into the faith.

My aim to make art that not only tells my story, but all our stories. To speak to the abused, the down-trodden, the hopeless, the lost, the lonely, the shamed, the orphan, the abandoned. My work is characterized by contrasts – the juxtaposition of light and dark on several levels – which is recognized throughout my paintings. Fine detail, drawn lines, and meticulously painted shapes clash with bold brushstrokes, spatters and blurred and melted colors. Leonie.e.Brown has a degree in Fine Arts and diploma in teaching and studied Fine Art in Potchefstroom. She was one of the early winners of the Volkskas (now ABSA) Atelier, and today lives and works Cape Town. She has been exhibiting and selling since 2004. Passionate about painting and experimenting with Encaustics, she focuses her work on the relationship between the human spirit, faith, touch, and daily life. About the Style: The brightness of oils are mixed with the soft translucency of encaustics (wax) and creates hidden messages and layers below. The layering gives the work a softness and richness that invites the viewer to look closer and to experience the satin-smooth surface through touch. The wax layers get more and more translucent through the warmth emanating from the exploring human hand. The viewer becomes a part of the slow change and clarity of the painting…as if the message is rising from the depth of the hidden soul to the surface of the mind. There is a strange ethereal beauty to these paintings as if made from air. It is important that the viewer is part of the process. Time blurs and heals our wounds. Like About Encaustics: The term Encaustica is derived from Greek, meaning burning in. Encaustic art has soft, smokey and sensual feel about it and is a spontaneous medium where hot or cold wax is used, to which colored pigments have been added. The liquid/paste is then applied to a surface and the various layers are melted and burned into each other. It is typically layered to create more opaque, or more translucent effects, and can be combined with other materials. Each layer of wax can also be scraped, textured or polished for a variety of finishes. The possibilities are endless—encaustic paintings can be abstract or realistic, subtle or bold—and the wax itself is enormously sensual. It’s really all about incorporating your own style into this wonderful medium.
