About The Artwork
Zehra Dogan is a Kurdish journalist, activist, artist, and feminist. She was imprisoned from 2017-2020 for her reporting and for sharing a painting of a Kurdish town destroyed by the Turkish military on social media. She continued creating art in prison. I have depicted her as the Shahmeran, a mythical snake goddess of wisdom who appears in both Kurdish and Turkish folktales.
