Despite his start as an ordinary official in late Qing Dynasty with a life-long goal of becoming a high scholar of confucianism, he became eventually the minister who almost single-handedly save a rotting dynasty from certain death ain the thralls of foreign invasion and internal rebellion. With a force of 3,000 peasants he trained to defend his hometown from the rebellion of Tai Ping Tian Guo, he ultimately commanded the most effective army in China at the time to defeat an enemy that was a million strong and occupied half of China for one and half decades. All this he did with the help of a deep and practical understanding of Confucianism's values and Chinese traditions. His clear morals and self-discipline left his legacy on a whole generation of Chinese high officials and are admired by all who have ruled China since.
