000. PORTRAIT had its genesis from a simple but regal portrait of a doberman. The minimalistic series couples a black silhouette with gold leaf, evoking an unsettling contrast. The most compelling expression of each piece lies in the base coat - each canvas vividly shows the depths of black using different mediums and textures. For Brando, the execution of this series became a way for him to communicate, and in completion, can be recognized as a portraiture of himself. The paintings were created with the vision they would sit atop a fireplace mantel; the gold elements flickering and the silhouettes vanishing in and out of focus playfully manipulates the ambiance of the room. The dissonance this inspires within the viewer plays with the worlds between graphic and fine art, black and void, misfit and belonging.
