ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Working on this series has now brought me to a new place, a place where stilllife, actionpainting, floral and anatomy obsession merge, so I felt I had to split the series into two, as this part has another feeling, but still relates to our thoughts on environment and pollution. It feels like Mother Earth is taking revenge. From January 2020, to as long as I needed, I had chosen to be in isolation, or residency if you like, in my own Copenhagen based studio. I had an inner voice that asked me to focus, and shut everything out. New brushes, and a ton of ideas, and silence around me, no deadlines, just ears and eyes on my wishes. I wanted to let nature speak, and wanted to develop on the stillleben movement, but still have anatomy as a focal point and keep the liveliness. Another nature started to grow in the studio. After a couple of months the pandemic came to Denmark, and it felt like my art already knew it was coming, and suddenly it felt like Mother Earth was taking revenge. The nature could breathe again, new horizons that had been hidden behind smog were visual, even the volcano experts that measure sound inside the earth said the Mother Earth was much more silent that ever before. My another nature series shows images of plants attacking humans, eating body parts or just grows next to each other in a new flora and fauna peacefully. Who knows, another nature may be rising right now outside your door?

Henriette Hellstern was born in Aarhus, Denmark 1979. She grew up on the country side at the base of the Mols Mountains in Denmark. The rough nature and fresh air, fields, trees and the ocean were places she went to contemplate and enjoy. She was accepted to Funen Art Academy in 2006 and graduated her MFA in 2011 with a large series of expressionistic portraits called Sexualities. Now she lives and works in Copenhagen. Henriette Hellstern work was evolved from being very abstract to more and more figurative over time, but always with a very direct honest approach. "I want the audience to connect with my artworks, and by being able to see the strokes and splashes we get a language with no words, where the image can take us into new adventures", she says. She has won several International art prizes and exhibited in San Francisco, New York, Vilnius, Athens and Brisbane to name a few. Latest she has been in a self chosen isolation in her Copenhagen studio, actually before Corona, where she has started a series that deals with nature taking revenge.
