This is part of a series exploring the notion of balance in terms of light, colour, composition and the gesture/energy in the making of painted marks. I am also exploring the nature of focus and attention, whether is it is sharp and concentrated, or more open and diffused - I am considering how these qualities can co-exist within single images. I also seek to create a visual quality which heads towards an equivalence to music, in terms of rhythm, energy and the complementary effects of colour within the overall design. The materials are professional quality artists' acrylic paint with the best permanence and strongest colour. The base for this picture is canvas, coated with handmade gesso on wooden board. The allows the paint to be used across a range from the most delicate glazes to impasto, all with a striking presence on the surface. The frame is smooth milled pine, handmade, coated with a single slightly translucent layer of white gesso, and finished with two coats of beeswax for protection and durability. I have refined my use of materials over many years to produce a high level of craftsmanship in all that I do, this includes my approach to framing and presentation. The stated dimensions of the work include the frame which is 4.5 cm wide.

I have been working with still life as a subject for many years; this has become a zone of continual experimentation and a journey into the exciting variety of possibilities that this focus can encompass. My artistic inspiration comes from many sources; I love the brushwork of Titian and Goya, the colour of Fra Angelico, and I also often include ideas about underlying geometric structure that takes in an almost architectural sensibility. For the last few years I have been making visual images that explore the idea of the dissolving energy of form, indicating a lack of permanence even in the simplest physical objects.
