Growing up with the sea on my doorstep and an Artist mother was all the inspiration I needed to pursue a career in art. Mum would sit on the pebbles with her easel and paint the stunning views across Whitstable beach. Our home was filled to brimming with her wonderful paintings. As soon as I could hold a pencil, all I wanted to do was drawI left school, where I had an incredibly supportive art teacher, to do an Art foundation course at Canterbury university. With my love of life drawing, illustration and growing passion for clothes, I was advised to apply for a Fashion Design Degree. To my complete surprise I was accepted by Kingston University. I started work in the early 80's when punk and the new romantic era was in full swing. I loved translating fashion from the catwalks into wearable and affordable clothing for young women. Getting married and having three children made us rethink our lifestyles. We moved away from London and eventually settled in Rutland. I could finally indulge in my first great love - painting. My passion for painting the outdoors, especially trees, never seems to dwindle. Rutland is a beautiful place and never fails to inspire me. I'm always on the lookout for a fabulous tree configuration! I start from sketches and photos - which I either enhance by intensifying the colours or distorting into a simplified abstract version. Light, shade and depth play an important role in achieving the desired effect. I primarily use acrylic paint, sometimes adding inks and metallic hues to add lustre.
