About The Artwork

This was the commission that pivoted my artwork in a new direction. I had been painting in black and white for so long. My mother said, "You need to do more color, Jennifer." So I looked for the first subject for my mother and finally settled on humming bird. Why? I found a lovely Mayan myth about the hummingbird that regards this transformative tale of a gentle soul who gives to so many others. In reward, the soul upon getting married, is gifted with a new dress of feathers, crafted by each of the animals and spirits of the forest to reveal the true beauty within this little animal. Such joy at giving and being recognized for what that soul truly is. I had to paint that moment the hummingbird got to soar with it's new "gown": joy, release, and love within and without for who they truly were. I chose watercolor for it's intense and soft qualities that allow me to layer from translucent to thick lacquer quality. I also paint with watercolors and ink because they force me to adapt and accept what happens on the paper, to improvise and adapt, as these animals and natural spirits do. To adapt is to survive, but to shine despite the complications is more. I hope you enjoy. Namaste.
