Abstract expressionism, abstract, cubism, energy, New York artists, all become influences. The exploration phase is personal and often cryptic. I feel that we are all like vessels taking in parts, feelings, sights, impressions, encounters of life as we meet it. These pieces operate as faint or strong memory sources coming out in line colour, texture, space, movements on the surface you are working on. If one is in conflict or longing, or happy, any emotional experience, parts and pieces become memory embeds. Artworks can look like the world around us, or feel like another world with fleeting glimpses, colour auras, textural memories, layers of senses, undefined philosophical spaces that emerge through the materials and processes of art making. An open process, trimmed down to very specific situations, settings or feelings. Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? A title by Paul Gauguin for a large painting, is symptomatic of a search for content and meaning, for eternal existences in the very nature of art making. Abstract work enlivens the person looking at the work bringing their own intuitions and experiences into play. The artist, like a medium, is a channel with materials and processes, allowing new experiences and interactions to be a part of our world. One young friend once said to me, what I like about abstract art is that it feels like it’s about me, what I see and feel.
