This work explores the texture and colour of the New Forest in Dorset, England. A place that has been very special to my family over decades. It evokes a multi-sensory response in the viewer and stimulates thoughts on connection to this beautiful landscape environment. The variety of greens and linear elements are what I have in my memory of being in this place. Encaustic wax is my medium, enabling me to build up texture and create effects that replicate landscape elements. The organic nature of the molten wax is unpredictable and creating the work becomes an intuitive process with the wax. The work is the process - of carving and incising, layering and melting, and deconstructing trees, and landforms into colour, line, and space. In the end, all that matters is whether the feeling I have towards this place is communicated in some way to the audience.

Emma is a mum, counsellor, practitioner in the disability sector, and small business owner. She has been an artist since she was very young and creativity runs through everything she does. When Emma connects with a place, it becomes part of her. She has had the opportunity to work in remote Australia, including Tennant Creek in Central Australia, and the impact of the landscape, people, and experience will never leave her. She makes sense of it and expresses it through her paintings. They become about more than the physical landscape, but the spiritual and emotional connections that landscapes and places can represent to us. In her studio, Emma takes an intuitive and exploratory approach to painting. She finds that the best work comes from letting herself be guided by the materials and her instincts, rather than trying to force the work to conform to a preconceived idea. Staying open and receptive to the unexpected directions that a painting takes means that Emma can tap into a sense of flow and spontaneity that is very creatively rewarding.
