I recently read The Overstory, by Richard Powers. After painting this painting. In the book, a character called Patricia Westerford works on a seed bank, to store all the planet's seeds. Well, this is what this lady is doing, actually, with her special helmet that prevents her from listening to people that think she is crazy.
Dr. Suzanne Simard of the University of British Columbia, is the real person, maybe, in which the character of Patricia Westerford is based. She is a biologist and has tested theories about how trees communicate with other trees. She used radioactive carbon to measure the flow and sharing of carbon between individual trees and species, and discovered that birch and Douglas fir share carbon. Birch trees receive extra carbon from Douglas firs when the birch trees lose their leaves, and birch trees supply carbon to Douglas fir trees that are in the shade.I really don't know how this proves that trees talk to each other, but it doesn't matter. I really think we do not need proofs to understand that we need to care for trees.
Not a great picture, i know. But I wanted to fit in the chandelier! This is the corridor of my mother in law's hotel in central Oaxaca. She had to hang the painting from the ceiling since these walls cannot take in any nails. The building is a catalogued historical building, and they need to be preserved untouched.

I am interested in experimenting with sincretic images that capture the whole range of religious experiences. I am inspired by the architecture and mural paintings of the Aztecs, Mayan, Zapotecan and other peoples from America and I like to intersect them with the aesthetics brought to America by the Spanish, like virgins, saints and holy beings. I intersect them with a third paradigm which is my personal journey into Indian philosophies and the idea of enlightenment. The result shows where I am now, believing that art is the way, and being an artist is my religion. I am an atheist, after years of searching. I am Mexican, after two migrations. I am a grandmother and that's a priviledge. Please check my IG to see processes, inspiration and things about Oaxaca.
