Playing with faint outlines of expressive animal figures, symbols, faux alphabets like you'd find in a cave. Scratching, experimenting and distressing the paint and canvas with different tools to get different effects.

I hope that by posting my art on this site art lovers find renewed interest in my work and times. It is difficult but rewarding to catalog years of art made prior to the digital age and remain thoughtful without becoming nostalgic. Born Bayshore, Long Island NY 1967. BA Architecture NYIT. I became a US Peace Corps volunteer in Tchad Africa after attempting to break into Hollywood set design and construction. Young and idealistic, making the world a better place became my artistic life goal. Upon my return from Africa, I moved to the nascent art community of Williamsburg Brooklyn in 1997. I sublet in a commercial building on Broadway and Bedford next to the Williamsburg bridge. My studio was also a gallery where I hosted numerous group and solo exhibits. I was part of the vanguard of pioneering DIY artists seeking affordable spaces to live and work in NYC. The only other galleries at the time in the rough and tumble neighborhood were Pierogi (with it’s file drawers)and the Williamsburg Art and Historical Society (WAH) diagonal across the intersection from me. Local bands like Soul Coughing & Simon and the Bar Sinisters were building followings. Rancid were laying down tracks at Coyote studios. In the pre-internet late 90s and early 2000s artists still had to provide slides to establishment galleries ( which were extremely cost prohibitive) and promotion was done via publications, fliers and word of mouth. Gentrification eventually pushed me out but I continued to make art and exhibit in the suburbs. At the age of forty I changed mediums and began exploring film making. In some ways it was a return to my earlier aspirations in set design and story telling. Then in 2013 I took a self paid sabbatical trip around the world and settled on the island of Maui in Hawaii where I currently live to this day. My most recent large body of work are digital sketches made on my smart phone. DM me for signed prints and original art pricing. Other media works include "Clotheslines". haiku inspired "picture poems" small tempera on paper works I made every day for a year. The spring collection is available on Amazon along with Dream Theatre#4 2009 a Dream diary. ?i=stripbooks&rh=p_27%3AJason+Coughlin&s=relevancerank&text=Jason+Coughlin&ref=dp_byline_sr_book_1 =sr_1_3?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.cHrVdz7009cLz2sbQf2F1GBCmC3A_Ye1AMQL62HfrMDGjHj071QN20LucGBJIEps.m2Jk52tpOKzfqlPjscbrlifoyKRHRZd3qzASVlyKzIw&dib_tag=se&keywords=J.
