ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Patterns are predictable, this series of works subjects this predictability to contingency. Stemming from a series of formal experiments, the series isolates forms, colors, and patterns that crumple best when subject to stress. The technique of acrylic and wax is unique. Melting the wax and acrylic corrupts the integrity of the form in ways that have both material and conceptual implications.

Joe Turek received a BFA from Clarke University and a master's from Syracuse University. In addition to his creative output as an artist he was the assistant director of Talent Agency Teen Portfolio Development Inc. and a public school art teacher as well for over eight years. His current body of work is a process of undoing a portrait. A full lifelike or abstract portrait of a powerful person is painted using acrylic on encaustic wax. The wax is melted away to reveal the final portrait.
