About The Artwork

At first glance, my paintings look like modern landscape painting in the impressionist style, on closer inspection it becomes clear that the work is the result of a very expressionist way of working. The brush does not touch the canvas when painting, rather the paint application arises from the physical movement. The paint is flung from the brush onto the canvas and painting becomes a performative act. This way of painting just won't let me go. I love both this color battle and the meticulous peeling out of the structures and transitions. The works, despite their complex and expressive manner of creation, appear very harmonious, soothing and beautiful in a classical way. Beauty may be an end in itself, but also bring depth with it. It is precisely in this area of tension that I try to act. The finished work show so-called forest areas, „Waldräume“ While working of „Waldraum“ the word „Wald“ (forest) contained the same kind of wonder I found in it as a child. How can so many things at once fit into a single word? Light, shadows, air, harshness, decay, blossoming, greatness and the very smallest of things. In the word itself I can not find a mirror for what „Wald“ has meant to me forever. „Wald“ is a place of rest as well as unrest, a place of that which is giant, of that which disappears in the minuscule. As with so many things, I hoped to find an answer through the attempt of understanding „Wald“ as a painting. In doing so, I went through several stages of motivation. There was a childlike desire to capture the adventure of the forest, and to relive it. There was the technocrat’s obsession to tame the invincible multitude; and the changing ways of light and shadows. A preposterous wish of course, but it was there. There was the human surrender in the face of all that is nature, again too big for words, and to precise even for the most elaborate painting.

To me, the world of images, is an explicable world. It grows before and within my eyes from inspiration, technique and my own hope, that something might happen which is entirely beyond inspiration and technique. In that I see it as a relative to the worlds of melodies, forms and rhythm. As it manifests through my hands, my brushes and my paints, it s a process of laying claim to something beyond possession. There is a certain sense of ownership through understanding in this kind of work. In the past years nature and especially the forest were a great source of inspiration for my work. On the other hand being exposed to city life I had the desire to bring "my" nature into the urban structure. Regulary I create installations in public spaces or initiate interventions with other artists (dancer, musicians, ...) - We recapture public spaces by artistic activities and pave the way for encounters of all kinds.
