ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This image is part of a series taken during my trips for a project called “La Otra Ruta”. The voyage of a photographer across Peru, an intimate look at the diversity, resilience and strength of Peruvians. People survive the hardships of life in villages high up on the mountains or face the challenges of the big cities. How do you live surrounded by such aridity, 4000m above sea level? How do you organize life next to an endless river? The men and women reflected in these photographs show a will to survive in an imposing, breathtaking geography. I was constantly overwhelmed by the beauty and majesty of the landscape. However, the more breathtaking the landscape, the hardest life becomes for its inhabitants. My challenge as photographer, was to capture and portray their tireless spirit, their dignity, their admirable contribution to the development of their communities. Where Peru shows its fierce and exuberant beauty, these men and women show their heroic will to overcome adversity.

I was born in Barcelona in 1974, but moved to Lima, Peru after a long boat journey when I was 5 months old. I spent most of my childhood traveling with my family and constantly moving from one place to another. This has given me an amazing life experience, but has also proven challenging in many ways. It is difficult for me to be completely at ease in one place for a long time. My childhood definitely played a role in my choice of becoming a photojournalist, constantly on the move, always trying to capture and immobilize life around me. I have worked professionally in photojournalism since 1996, mostly as a free lance photographer for the Spanish newspaper El País. Although based in Madrid for many years, my projects have included reportages from Ecuador, Peru, Mexico, Albania, Kosovo and Israel/Palestine where I covered the retreat of Israeli troupes from Gaza, among others. Most of my work has been published in El País and EPS magazine. I lived in Bagdad, Irak in 2003 whilst working for an NGO that provided emergency aid to the Iraqi people. I am currently based in Lima, working on personal photography projects through my NGO “Desvela”, which helps bring to light social issues in need of wider promotion. I have included here photos and stories from my travels around the world.
