Hywel T. Cardew’s practice is multidisciplinary in approach, encompassing a range of media varying from film, installation, and photography. //// (Review by art critic, Gowri Balasegarem) Cardew is interested in the notion of positive social narrative, which is expressed by sincerity and satire in equal value. Cardew's works are studies of living. They make us re-evaluate the way in which we focus on the end result whilst paying little heed to the process; for him the process is the product. Cardew is also interested in the shifting perception of things; how an object, depending on its cultural and aesthetic framing, almost irrelevant of its functionality, communicative power, or inherent quality, will be received as being imbued with greater or lesser quality and importance. //// Hywel T. Cardew was awarded a first class honours in Architecture, in 2011, attaining the second highest grade ever awarded by the University of Bath. His thesis (an architecture for community, politics, commerce and festival) was given the award of 'design excellence.' During his graduation exhibition, Cardew was approached by the eminent architecture studio, Herzog & de Meuron, whom he subsequently collaborated with at their design HQ in Basel, Switzerland for two years. Whilst at H&deM, he was introduced to collaborations with several of the world's leading artists, including Thomas Ruff, Michael Craig-Martin, Ai Weiwei & Kanye West. //// Cardew has exhibited within the UK & internationally. In 2015 he was commissioned to produce a temporal public space installation & held a solo show exhibiting film and photography.
