This is the town where I was born. After the uranium mines closed, people left, and the place was left to age quietly in the mountains. No reconstruction, no renovation. Just time doing what it does. What drew me was not the decay but the details that survived it — the curtain still hanging, the fl...

About the Artist

Galina Shichenko

Qatar

My name is Galina Shichenko. Welcome to my page. I was born in Uzbekistan and am currently living in Qatar.

I grew up in a family of photographers. My earliest memory of it is standing in the bathroom as a child, watching my mother develop film in the dark. Red light, chemicals, an image slowly appearing on paper. I never planned to make photography my life. But it found me.

I’ve been shooting for over fifteen years, across many genres: conceptual, portrait, documentary, architecture. I graduated from the Tashkent House of Photography and have won international competitions. These days I work mostly with film, long exposure, double exposure, slow shutter. I’m drawn to processes where something unexpected can still happen.

Photography for me is a way of being curious about the world. People, light, cultures, angles I haven’t seen before. And at the same time it’s deeply personal, almost like a diary. Every image carries something of where I was and what I felt when I made it. But I never want it to stay only mine. I make it hoping that whoever looks at it finds something of their own there too.

Painting has been with me since childhood as well. My mother is an artist, and I studied it seriously. Then I stepped away for a long time. I came back to it when I was pregnant with my daughter. Something pulled me back, and I realized I had things to say that only paint could carry. My long-held dream is to bring photography and painting together, and that’s the direction I’m heading.

I hope something here resonates with you.
