The Amsterdam Hortus Botanicus houses an amazing collection of plants from all over the world, but generally founded in the various colonies that the Dutch East India company oversaw during its heyday. The Victoria Amazonica was named after Queen Victoria - ironically the behaviour of the plant is that it spreads out until only those of its kind remains. Its leaves cut out the sunlight underneath it preventing other plants from growing below it in the water.
