About The Artwork
Arjuna's Penance is a granite bas relief stone carving dating back to the Pallava Kings in the 7th century. This magnificent work featuring a herd of elephants took many years of chipping away at a very hard granite rockface in the coastal city of Mahabalipuram (now Mamallapuram) in South India. For centuries the town has been a centre for stone carving and many streets are lined with the the handiwork of these skilled craftspeople. There is also an extraordinary temple complex from the same era near the seafront making the place a must visit for anyone interested in the wonderful early history of India. A large print of this photograph makes a great centrepiece for anyone who loves elephants.

I was born in Trinidad and Tobago and travelled all over the world with my parents before settling in The UK for my education. I went to Sherborne School and Reading University before moving to London to be a photographic assistant to many different photographers including Anthony Blake and Spencer Rowell. Then I moved to Australia to further my career in photography that is now 35 years long as a commercial and art photographer in Sydney. I have had several exhibitions including Transformation 1992, Lifeforce 1996, Sahaja 2000, and have completed new spiritual works, The Chakras, 2014 that are shown here on Saatchi Art. I now also teach photography with Alfonso Photo tours in Sydney. I have two websites, Chrisljonesphoto.com for commercial and sahajaprints.com for prints.
