ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I turn my photos into unconventional photo collages: landscapes and events. I modify and combine my images into layers that resemble states of mind - dreams and truth are mingling. The reaction of materials that change their visual appearance fascinates me. I combine rusted and worn surfaces with other materials and enjoys the unpredictability and surprises of the final work. Each collage consists of 2 to 7 layers. I have taken the photos both in Finland and abroad. One of the inspirations to this collage was a weird wall in New York. The portrait of the woman found in antiquarian book shop.

Ulla Väätäinen is Helsinki-based visual artist. She works with photography and video. Her works has been exhibited in several private and joint exhibitions and festivals in Finland and abroad. She is fascinated by the fact that matter does not have permanent form and existence. In her photo collages she uses images of objects, materials, structures, and phenomena that are on an edge, in a transitional space or in process. The original significance of the image as a permanent documentation of a memory has evaporated, connections to its original stories have disappeared.
