ABOUT THE ARTWORK

A morning walk in the summertime in Montauk brought this surfer into my view. One of the most beautiful sports, carving the waves out. I moved away from the typical expected colors that one sees in a Polaroid and used this special film. I have this photo printed on a fine art paper and then glue it to birch which is non-acidic. Then begins the process of adding the encaustic wax which I do with a brush and then work with a palette knife until I get it to the point where I feel it is finished. The wax is polished by hand several times until it shines. When finished I have framer use a fine maple frame and float it without glass. The beauty of encaustic wax is that you don't need to cover it with glass. You can touch the surface of the wax as it is very strong.

Shawn Ehlers is a former Ford/Elite model who lived and worked in Milan, Paris and New York before getting behind the lens. Photographed by well-known photographers as Helmut Newton, Olivero Toscani and Albert Watson, her shift behind the camera was an easy transition. She gave models movement and posing directions familiar to her, helping launch successful commercial and fashion careers. Also working as a celebrity shooter for Wireimage and Getty Images, some of her roster includes: Lady Gaga, Meryl Streep, Jack Nicholson, President’s Bush and Clinton, Susan Sarandon, and Whoopie Goldberg. As a fine artist she won the prestigious gold award in 2015, Prix de la Photographie (PX3) for her series, “Women as Birds”. She combines the medium of Polaroid photography with the ancient art of encaustic wax.
