T. Chick McClure was born female-bodied to a conservative, military-household in the 1970s, and spent his early life feeling “wrong.” When he couldn’t risk expressing himself as the boy he was, he escaped into his art, depicting himself as male in his drawings as early as three years old. While his medium has evolved, from print-making and painting to photography, his art has always been story-driven, a place where he could explore themes of gender, masculinity, vulnerability and authenticity without scrutiny, always seeking, through the narrative of his subject, to capture a facet of himself, while keeping a portion of his truth hidden. After publicly coming out as transgender, his axis shifted and the desire to live as his authentic-self drove him to start the physical process of transitioning and, finally, to turn the camera on himself, eliminating the buffer he’s maintained by shooting others and revealing his true self to the world: Bare. Exposed. Raw. T. Chick McClure is an openly transgender, fine arts photographer, Grammy award-winning director and graduate of the prestigious School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
