Greta Sarfaty Marchant, known on the art scene as Gretta Sarfaty, was born in Athens, Greece and raised in Brazil. She has lived and worked in São Paulo, Paris, Milan and New York and is now based in London. Gretta has earned international acclaim as a performance artist, in particular the body art movement, since the late 70's. Alongside her artistic practice she was the founder of the project-led space Sartorial Contemporary Art (2003 - 2010) and since 2010 has been running a family trust the Alegre Sarfaty Collection. Her work was exhibited internationally, including the "˜Centre Georges Pompidou', Paris (1979). Her life as an artist was the inspiration for the film The Portrait starring Gregory Peck and Lauren Bacall, directed by Arthur Penn in 1993. In 2003 she founded a project-led space Sartorial Contemporary Art, to support young British artists Gretta's passion for contemporary art led her to collect works of internationally acclaimed artists, and to establish The Alegre Sarfaty Collection, a privately own family trust, in 2010. The artist's practice engages different forms of expression ranging from performance and video to digital photography and fine art techniques. Her work is often a reflection on her personal experiences as a woman, her family and her upbringing.
