About The Artwork

Influenced by the Romantic Movement of the late 18th century, I am trying to see the extraordinary in the everyday. I am interested in evoking an emotional response with my images through the elements, time of day, colour or compositional elements within the subject. I would like to invoke the emotions that I felt at the time the image was taken, the magic of being in the moment. My interest in the photographic process began as a childhood hobby. I fell in love with black and white photography and the craft of producing photographic prints in the darkroom. I have tried to carry this thought process through in to the digital era and into the digital darkroom. Leafing through sepia toned images of Angkor Wat (Cambodia) in my encyclopaedia as a small child, I dreamed of visiting strange and exotic places. In 1989/90 my love of travel and photography was cemented together by a year backpacking around SE Asia and India. I never imagined that my life would involve travelling the world as a photographer for travel magazines and advertising clients. Photography can be a meditative practice which is both supremely simple and at the same time extremely difficult, it's mysterious in that way and I have a deep love for it whether I'm photographing a play of light on a wall near my home in Ramsgate or some difficult to reach destination around the world.

Of his work Gary says; "I see my work as being in the Romantic tradition. My work has been described as cinema-graphic, otherworldly and emotionally charged. I love to take pictures, I'm interested in people, culture, society and a sense of place. I travel a lot and I am a romantic of sorts. I was once described as having a 19th Century sensibility. Maybe that is because I like nostalgia, found things and a touch of fantasy. My aim is to find magic in the everyday."
