About The Artwork

“CARNIVAL RIDE” - Los Angeles, 2006 A wandering carnival came to my neighborhood in Venice Beach. Sadly, it was poorly attended. But I went -- camera in hand, pockets full of film -- knowing this old relic of amusement may not be around for much longer and was worth documenting. The day I took this photo the ride was broken, seats empty. I was there shooting all weekend and no one got to enjoy it. What struck me was the immense size and weight of the wheel in contrast with the seats suspended by thin wires. The seats looked as if they were weightless, like spores floating from a mushroom. I waited patiently to take the shot at dusk. I wanted to have enough light to capture the detailed design - the women, the diamonds… But I also needed the approaching night to help the lights shimmer. In taking this photo, I wanted viewers to feel what I felt below this great wheel - to wonder what would it be like to float in those seats? I imagine it’s like taking a ride back in time. This time machine gives us a glimpse into the past, a remembered youth - innocence and beauty that is worth recapturing.

California native Chris Olness was born in San Francisco and now lives in Los Angeles. He’s a documentary photographer with a passion for strong images and voyeuristic adventure. His camera has taken him to the shores of Indonesia, rooftops of Paris and deserts of Mexico. His modern eye is drawn to the poetic harmony of form and light. The work is focused on storytelling, relationships and solitude. ------------------------------------------------ Olness captures the stark beauty of the world he roams. Drawn to Eastern philosophy, wabi-sabi flows through his work like the tide over sea glass. Olness believes photography provides us with a unique opportunity to reflect on the world within and around us. ------------------------------------------------ Olness’ exploration with the still image is complimented by his work as a director of cinema. He developed his love for photography and storytelling while working in visual effects editorial for George Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic (ILM). ------------------------------------------------ If words were photos, Olness would shoot like John Steinbeck. In The Log from the Sea of Cortez, Steinbeck and his best friend marine biologist Ed Ricketts journey on the Western Flyer from the dripping fog of Cannery Row, Monterey to the sun drenched Gulf of California to discover and document life -- and along the way gather insight into nature, beauty and humanity. ------------------------------------------------ Olness photography is represented by Voila! (Los Angeles, CA) and Battersea (San Francisco, CA). And accepts photo assignment and sales inquiries directly. ------------------------------------------------ Exclusive limited edition prints are available in three standard sizes. More info at chrisolness.com ------------------------------------------------ Print prices range from $750 - $4000. Larger sizes can be custom ordered, image resolution dependent. Pricing based on previous gallery, designer and direct to collector sales. Artist may have 2 A.P. prints for each size of each edition. If you would like to see more, have a specific photo, location or mood in mind, please inquire. Glad to dig into the vault for you. ------------------------------------------------ To ensure collectors quality and consistency, Olness works with master photo printer Weldon Color Lab, Los Angeles. Photos are digital C-prints on archival photographic paper.
