About The Artwork

I fix images of realities that are impermanent, contained in time and space unseen, which exist only as captured and recorded by me in the pitch black darkroom artist. As such, I work in fictional landscape, the result of a lifelong exploration of our relation to the natural and built environment, while generating a tension between abstraction and realism that is integral to the work. This is a unique image, with no copies. It is created directly onto the photographic paper without any computer-aided correction. The cibachrome surface captures all the subtleties of light moving through space, replicating movement through life itself. Centro is on cibachrome photographic paper, mounted on aluminum and suspended in a wooden box frame, ready for hanging.

I live and work in Bogotá and New York, and have been showing in Colombia, the US and Europe for several years. My work focuses on Nature, on the life cycle and the larger picture of our existence and meaning on Earth. Colombia is a tropical country with a wild and present natural environment, that is undeniable in its life force and which connects the individual permanently and constantly the source of life. To reflect the variety of experience I work in several techniques and media, with a constant method. Replicating the process of memory, I develop selective layers of information in all my work to build a narrative of human experience. I work in luminography, a technique I developed in the darkroom using the photogram as a point of departure, and which has allowed me to explore the behavior of light as color and as signifier. Color is a direct connector to emotion, and the process carried out in absolute darkness allows a sublimation of intent and a focus on the creation of meaning. I also work in paint, approaching the tradition in a similar way, constructing levels of meaning with color, form and gesture. These works demand a different type of focus and precise execution. I have several projects under way including a tome on the technique of luminography, various graphic projects, and the creation of a cultural strategy arena. While varied they all come from the belief that our most important ability is to create, to build, and to communicate. My work is included in several public and private collections in the US, Europe, and South America. Reviewed in The New York Times
