"Christ the Redeemer" A heavenly aerial of Rio de Janeiro and Christ the Redeemer atop Corcovado. Many years I have lived in Brazil. It was this one late afternoon: The sun was setting and I noticed loosely grouped, low hanging Cumulus clouds through which patches of sky could be seen. No time wasted, I hired a helicopter to fly me above the clouds. It was an utmost bumpy ride through the tropical turbulences, I was balancing outside the open bubble, on the helicopter skids, with my life attached to the helicopter with nothing but a plastic belt made in Brazil (or maybe China). Then, once we broke through a large cloud this most heavenly scene unfolded. Christ the Redeemer towering 710 meters atop Corcovado Mountain, spreading his arms, as if to bless this city, bless the world and bless all of humanity. Clouds drifted by, the famous Sugarloaf appeared in the backdrop and the setting suns heavenly rays broke through the cloudscape. This was maybe the most magical moment in a thirty year career in photography, travelling all continents and shooting millions of images. This is also one of my worldwide most published images. It is also displayed in the famous Candelaria Church in Rio de Janeiro.
