About The Artwork

A vintage image of a wall with corrugated metal with a snowplow. It reminded me of a composition by the famous abstract expressionist, Piet Mondrian. It was made in 1974 when I was working toward my MFA in photography. Some people call me a "pioneer" of fine art color as only myself and a few others were specializing in the medium in the early 1970's, due to the fact it faded. However, in the late 70's I found representation by the Alonzo Gallery in midtown New York City. It was published in a feature about me in the second issue of COLOR, July 2009. This is a pristine new print, made from a high resolution scan of the original Kodak Ektacolor Professional negative. It was made by me and is one of a possible edition of 5 plus two artist's proofs. Prints made in 1974 have long ago been discarded or fade. This print is much more stable than the original C print. It is also the best print of the negative that I have ever made. It was made on an Epson Professional printer with archival pigment inks, which have a longevity of well over 100 years. The print is made on 22"X17" Epson Exhibition Fiber paper, which gives it a true photographic look as well as detail and saturation. There is a border of 1 inch on the sides, and 3.5 inches on the top and bottom. I have titled and numbered it on the bottom left, and signed and dated it on the lower right, in archival pen. It comes securely and safely packaged in a large mailing tube, interleaved with glassine, and sealed in a plastic envelope. I specifically remember everything about making this image. It was late on a beautiful day in late October 1974. I was driving around looking for pictures. I drove the thirty or so miles south to Middletown NY. Driving by the garage where they repaired the highway department vehicles, I saw this. I got out, set up my tripod, and tried my best to shoot it straight on. I took a number of different perspectives of it. This proved to be the most successful.

BLACK FRIDAY SALE ON MY WEBSITE https://russmartinandmarciamartin.com Mr. Martin is a citizen of the USA, having been born in upstate New York State and spending his youth in the small rural village of Clinton. Because of this exposure, and frequent trips to their summering spot in the Adirondack Mountains, nature became a part of him. Naturally, it would become expressed though his art, which was inspired by his father, a part time professional photographer and amateur watercolor painter. When he was young, professional cameras were ever present, as well as a fully equipped darkroom. There was a mystique about photography, and "that place", that he wanted to know, so he convinced his father to teach him. Thus began a life long career as a fine art photographer. Later, he went on to study fine art photography at college, and earn an MFA in photography so as to be able to teach photography on the college level, have time to produce his work, and earn a living from what he loved. He was a fine art photography teacher for over thirty years, and is now retired, having done so in 2008, to concentrate full time on his work. Over the years, Mr. Martin has won numerous awards and feature articles have been published about him in national and international publications. Recently, his pictures have been featured in the UK, Australia, and the USA. His flora images of hosta plants have won first place awards in the Prix de la Photographie, Paris, the International Photography Awards (The Lucies), and the International Garden Photographer of the Year.
