About The Artwork

This photographic work originally grew out of a fascination with storm and lightning imagery and its associated myth. I looked at how science evolved out of the early 15th century alchemists investigations into substances and reactions whilst artist in residence at the Bakken Museum of Electricity in Minneapolis. At this time early scientific investigation of magnetism and chemical substances was still intertwined with magic, religion and mysticism. In my work images of metamorphosis are often explored; raw electricity into lightning, maps of how energy flows, how it’s created, held and transmitted. Histological images and scientific glassware are set alongside a range of objects, ranging from eggs, blood, branch and roots, to microscopic projections of webs, dirt and insect wings. Projection onto drafting film is a key element in the construction and presentation in much of the work; it elicits an instant abstracting of image and scale in which a cosmos can be projected into a jar and plant roots transform into forest like arteries. Distinctions between genres are blurred and in making the work, the act of projection provides the ability to contrast seemingly disparate images or objects and draw comparisons on the macro and micro level. Contrasted with this are references to stories, myths and folk tales that often embody a symbolic metamorphosis.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

I photograph still life/assemblage/projection set ups in the studio which utilize light, silhouette, and transparency. I often make short films which combine the still with the moving image. The resulting films or still imagery are usually displayed as installations in the UK and abroad. Ideas behind the work are drawn from the contrasting fields of science and nature and religious and other mythical writings and folk tales. Current inspiration is Joseph Campbell's book 'Inner Reaches of Outer Space'.
