A Tumbleweed has gathered pieces of discarded cotton on its journey, and come to rest in front of a stand of trees. The soft nature of the very unique film stock creates a very otherworldly texture thanks to the large grain, while at the same time having incredibly low contrast and tactile softness.

Hay, New South Wales, August 2018

Shot on Foma Retropan 320ASA 35mm film. The image has been professionally scanned from the original 35mm negative, and printed using archival pigment ink on resin-coated Kodak lustre photographic paper. The black border indicates a full-frame uncropped image. This image is also available as a handmade darkroom print using traditional photochemical techniques and archival toner.

The default print size is on 12”x16” paper, which equates to an actual image size of 25.5cm x 37.5cm.
Please contact me if you’d like a different size.

The photographic paper size is not indicative of the actual image size on the print as there needs to be white space to allow for framing as well as the edition number & signature.

I am a New Zealander from Wellington, currently living in Sydney, Australia since 2008. I am passionate about film photography, and capturing the Australian landscape in all it’s harshness and beauty, often in the same frame. I love to create images which are simple and uncluttered; which have an inherent beauty with their composition, dream-like quality, and minimal colour or grey palette. My wish is that they are pleasant and restful to look at, and somewhere peaceful and quiet to dwell for a time. Film is a wonderful medium for creating images that appear slightly other-worldly and magical, with its beautiful natural grain and naturalistic colour palette. I want to take the viewer to places around Australia they would not think to go otherwise. This is the reason I love to travel in the way I do; most of my favourite images are from places on roads not necessarily leading toward anywhere important. Often the most pleasing subjects and situations are not always famous geographic features and national parks, but everyday back-country roads and lanes, and dusty old streets in small forgotten towns. I love stark and moody landscapes, interesting light, and wide-open spaces.
