About The Artwork

The timeless work "Descending to Yamuna River" was created during my stay in India at the holy river Yamuna. Great importance is attributed to the Yamuna in Indian mythology. Old stories tell that the river originally originated from the Ghaggar River. However, over the years it changed its direction. It owes his name to the goddess Yamuna, also known as Yami or later Kalinda (the dark one). Legends say that this legendary place was blessed by Krishna, who fell into the waters as a baby. This gave rise to a popular belief: people who immerse themselves in the sacred waters are healed and spared from sickness, death and fear. During my trip to India, I visited this spiritual and mythical place. Once there, I was able to experience and capture some wonderful moments. I would like to tell you a story about one of these moments: A few hours before sunrise, my wife and I set out to visit the place called Keshi Ghat on the pier of Yamuna. Once there, we spotted a beautiful temple and stone steps leading down to the bank of the sacred river. Although it was before dawn, many people were already gathered to perform their religious rituals. This fascinating sight radiated incredible calmness. Overwhelmed by the atmosphere, I walked thoughtfully down the steps to the bank of Yamuna. Brightly colored flowers from previous offerings were lying everywhere and deep mist hung in the air. Men and women dressed in splendid traditional robes strode past me, introverted. I felt this moment as magical and wanted to capture it completely authentic. Luckily, the people around were deep in thought and in a world where I did not exist. In seconds, I positioned myself at the edge of the stairs and purposefully pressed the shutter button. I managed to immortalize this breathtaking sight unaltered. This work takes you far away from your everyday life. It accompanies you to a place where faith is living. Through it, hope is created. Because he gives us humans the certainty that everything will be fine. 2011 Limited edition, signed, titled and numbered. My photographic stagings explore nature, time, and spirituality. I work with these three factors in my photographic practice and draw my inspiration from them. Everything in the material world is created, then remains for a while and will eventually vanish again. The greatest way to observe these three manifestations is in nature. Philosophically this subject is summarized in the Vedic scriptures under the term Guna. For me, artistic inspiration has utmost significance and has a great influence on my creative processes. Therefore, I stage my motives with the help of light and colors, and above all with the connecting tool of time. Time cannot be influenced, it is quasi autonomous, incorruptible and at the same time a connecting element. On my first trip to India in 2004, the following statement from a holy scripture inspired me to create works such as Vibrations, Spiritual Stairs, Dimension Door: “To show them special mercy, I, who dwell in their hearts, destroy with the shining torch of knowledge the darkness born of ignorance.” I'm working and living in Berlin. Before in 2002 I finished a professional training as a photographer I was active in the graffiti scene. I won renowned photo prizes and got a lot attention with my early fire drawings, which I written into nightscapes like self-portraits, as well as landscape portraits reflecting on human and nature as phenotypes. 2013 I have shown my work „Coming back from Yamuna River“ to 55th Venice Biennale. 2017 I had two big museum shows mainly concentrated on my photographs done in India. India affected me, my workflow and made me think about human life.
