Drystone wall drifts,The High street ,Lakedistrict Photograph - Limited Edition of 10

This was taken back in the late 90's on a day I was out cross-country skiing up the old Roman causeway over the Lakedistrict fells known as the "High street " the path joins windermere through the Troutbeck valley to Pooley Bridge at the top of Ullswater , where it is said there is sacred ground ! The alleged idea was to prevent avoidable death by the locals ,recognising the fact that if someone "died " the body had to be carried over the fells to Pooley bridge .That would have put many a fight off, especially in winter! See my other image of High raise ,there you can see the dry stone wall with the path running alongside disappearing into the mist. The drifts of snow pile up on the west side of the wall in the most wonderful of shapes .Its the Siberian east wind that contributes to the cold snaps and snow found on the fells .The snow here has a "washing up powder" look to it .
