It was another stormy and wet day in February, the dullest of our Dutch winter months. I left my studio in the rain to be in the dunes when the sky would clear. Theo Bos Born: 1959 Based in Deventer (NL) Theo Bos is a contemporary Dutch photographer nowadays known for his his representation of (Dutch) landscape. When graduating from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam in 1987 he focused mainly on the Dutch dealing with times of plenty. Located rurally (Recreation in the Netherlands, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, 1990) or in urban environments (CD-ROM project The Perfect Picture, Excellence Award, Tokyo Museum of Photography, 1998), the human habitat was his subject. Afther the birth of his children he took a break and concentrated on commercial work for (a.o) the National Investment Bank, the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Cultural Council North Holland. While not exhibiting anymore, in this period he steadily worked on personal projects, resulting in self published books like Erschüttert (former East Germany) and APAD, the best days. His work is influenced bij New Topographers and the Düsseldorfer Schule. In the 2010's Bos developed an affinity for landscape photography, slowly but surely exchanging the human environment for the natural habitat. Navigating through the sublime, the graceful, and other dangers of landscape photography, he achieved a restricted, though still rather lush form of representing our natural landscape, focusing on the singularity of it. Bos recently exhibited in group shows at the Fotomuseum The Hague, The IJssel Biennale and solo at Gallery De Twee Pauwen. His work is included in collections of the Photography Museum The Hague, Lasalle Bank Chicago, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The publication of his book Sea, Dune, River (Jap Sam Books), representing the immanent qualities of the threatened Dutch landscape, is due for 2025.
