Thank You for being interested in my work. As an artist light is my main interest, for it is the outmost important ingredient of my art. If the light isn't perfect the work just doesn't give back all the effort I have put in the subject. Because I only work with daylight I am dependent on the available light. As I chose not to do photoshop the works You see are real compositions, therefore it is challenge to get everything right; composition, light, background, table and of course the chosen subject. But there is something else in working like I do which makes the works unique, namely the stage of the proces where even I as a composer do not have any control; coincidence. The act of surprise or accidental interference. At a certain point I have to let things happen as they do and that is where the magic happens. Often this is at the very end of a long day in the studio, or even after a few days. My mind has to be tired of thinking and making up solutions for certain problems that occur during the proces. It is a fine line, for you have to be very on point and sharp, but in the same moment totally receptive for what is about to occur, like an antenna. The flowers in my work are mostly historical, antique and special breeds in which I put a lot of effort to find. The tulips in this series come from a breeder who is specialized in historical Dutch tulips, some from over 200 years old. My intention is to achieve tranquility, inspiration and amazement through beauty. I can only hope that I can share a fraction of what is given to me through my work.

DIANA MONKHORST works as a full-time artist with photography as her medium. She graduated from the Rietveld Academy with a specialty in portraiture. From an initial love of portraits, her interests have turned more and more toward still life, but the approach remains the same. Diana works to get as close as possible to the essence of the chosen subject. In her photography she deliberately uses dark backgrounds, creating similar effects as the old masters; namely, the chosen subject is made visible in all its naked beauty. As for the choice of flowers, they serve as a comforting reminder, a reassurance, that throughout the ages and despite wars, natural disasters and the rapidly changing world, something stays constant. Flowers have been gratefully used in art since time immemorial. Herein for Diana lies the wondrous power of nature. The wondrous power of Diana’s art is twofold: on the one hand, it conveys beauty and strength and nudges us to think deeply; on the other hand, it effortlessly brings happiness to anyone who looks at it.
