About the Artist

Cristian Stefanescu

United Kingdom

Cristian Stefanescu is a British multidisciplinary artist whose practice centres on photography and investigates the unstable territory between perception and what we consider to be reality. Working across photography and other visual forms, he considers how images are constructed, how meaning is projected onto them, and what they might reveal about the nature of consciousness and existence.

Stefanescu’s approach to image-making has developed alongside an unusual professional trajectory. Trained in engineering and having spent more than a decade in academia as a Senior Lecturer before moving into information technology and consultancy, he came to art through a sustained engagement with systems, structures and ways of understanding the world. Art and photography have been part of his life since his teenage years, gradually becoming the central means through which these questions could be pursued.

His work moves between the visible and what the mind brings to it. An image can begin with something recognisable and become a way of asking what it means to recognise anything at all. Perception becomes both subject and method: what we see, what we expect to see, and what we unconsciously add to what is in front of us. His photographs and related works resist fixed interpretations, opening instead onto questions of memory, projection, consciousness, belief and the construction of meaning.

At the centre of Stefanescu’s practice is a persistent question: what, exactly, is an image capable of telling us about the reality we think we inhabit?
