ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Pigment print on archival, 300gsm matt surface paper, beautifully rendered with rich, saturated colour. All paper sizes include 2 inch white border around the print for framing. Signed, numbered, dated au verso. Includes a signed Certificate of Authenticity. Peter Horvath exhibits in museums and galleries globally, and his work is included in permanent collections internationally, including the Nion McEvoy collection, and a new addition in 2016 to the Whitney Museum of American Art. He is the recipient of commissions from at The New Museum, NYC and New Radio and Performing Arts, Boston. Exhibitions include the Whitney Museum Of American Art‘s Artport (NYC), Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo (Mexico City), the Musée national des beaux-arts du  Québec  (Québec City, Canada) and FILE Electronic Language International Festival (São Paulo, Brazil). When Horvath was in his 30’s his mother, Eva, shared a story about being offered a position to run the Carlu Auditorium, a historic event space, in the late 60’s. The Carlu’s general manager had met Eva, and was so impressed by her sensibility and candor, asked if she’d like to run the space with “carte blanche” or as Eva tells it, “I could book whomever I wanted, Sinatra, Tony Bennett, anyone”. However, after a few days of deliberation, she declined, stating that she had two small children and couldn’t see how to combine motherhood with a full-time position that would also, inevitably, require travel. Horvath says “I’ve returned to this story many times over the years, and viewing through a present day lens, it seems an incredible opportunity lost. Standards have shifted, the roles of each parent changed. I wonder, would my mother, a strong, independent woman and huge inspiration to me, who to this day lives alone at age 87, make this same decision as a young woman in 2019?” Horvath includes her image along with other accomplished women from the 70’s and 80’s, with reverence and respect, and also includes his wife and daughter who, through their own strength, autonomy and self-determination, inspire him every day.

Peter Horvath is an assemblage and new media artist. Exhibiting in museums and galleries globally, his work is included in numerous permanent and private collections. Embracing digital technologies at the birth of the Web, he created audio/video narrative works through selective editing of film footage and the use of his early collages. His assemblage works similarly focus on deconstructing and recontextualizing imagery through collage. Merging street ephemera, movie posters, photographs, ink, acrylic and spray paint, Horvath’s densely layered assemblage portraits reflect on his fascination with media consumption, cultural icons and urban decay.
