About The Artwork

I made this image while in graduate school, working toward my MFA in fine art photography. At that time I was very familiar with the work of Edward Weston and respected his work greatly. However, whereas his peppers were classical sculptural forms, this one has a humorous quality. To me, it looked like a cartoon character's hand making a fist. I used a high quality, professional medium format camera to make the image. I then photographed it from other perspectives. My image, "Pepper #1" is a classical sculptural image of the same pepper. There were others too. It was the most amazing vegetable I have ever seen or photographed. This image was made on fine grain black and white film, which I developed. I made one large gelatin silver print of it hanging in my home. I never tire of the sharpness and tactile qualities. This image is made from a scan of the negative. It is then printed on 22"X17" Epson Exhibition Fiber paper with a professional Epson printer and K2 pigment inks, which have a longevity rating of over 300 years. The image has a border of 1" on the left and right, and 3.5" on the top and bottom. It is titled and numbered on the lower left, and signed and dated on the lower right. The date of printing appears on the reverse.

BLACK FRIDAY SALE ON MY WEBSITE https://russmartinandmarciamartin.com Mr. Martin is a citizen of the USA, having been born in upstate New York State and spending his youth in the small rural village of Clinton. Because of this exposure, and frequent trips to their summering spot in the Adirondack Mountains, nature became a part of him. Naturally, it would become expressed though his art, which was inspired by his father, a part time professional photographer and amateur watercolor painter. When he was young, professional cameras were ever present, as well as a fully equipped darkroom. There was a mystique about photography, and "that place", that he wanted to know, so he convinced his father to teach him. Thus began a life long career as a fine art photographer. Later, he went on to study fine art photography at college, and earn an MFA in photography so as to be able to teach photography on the college level, have time to produce his work, and earn a living from what he loved. He was a fine art photography teacher for over thirty years, and is now retired, having done so in 2008, to concentrate full time on his work. Over the years, Mr. Martin has won numerous awards and feature articles have been published about him in national and international publications. Recently, his pictures have been featured in the UK, Australia, and the USA. His flora images of hosta plants have won first place awards in the Prix de la Photographie, Paris, the International Photography Awards (The Lucies), and the International Garden Photographer of the Year.
