About The Artwork

Suspended in space we float. Gravity does not hold us down we are held by the water in a state of sensory immersion. In this work I have removed context by digitally removing all distraction except that of the figure, the refractions of the light and the ambiguous texture marking the boundaries between the place above and the place below. The water removes the limitations of the figure and the blackness removes the limitations of narrative allowing the viewer to bring their own emotive narrative to the work. The artwork is a digitally manipulated photograph.

Nikki Willson works as a new media artist, video installation artist and photographer exploring issues of figuration, identity and otherness. Nikki has exhibited in a range of local and international art events and solo and group shows and her work has been acquired by private collectors and commissions. “Our lives exist within a world of constant movement and distraction. We are in constant negotiation between the space that we occupy and our own internal dialogue. There are moments however when everything becomes still and quiet. It is this sense of being outside of time that I am trying to capture in my work. I am also interested in mental health and neurodiversity, exploring issues of memory and identity. By manipulating the digital image I combine photography and painting to remove context and create narrative ambiguity. This ambiguity requires the viewer to fill the narrative space surrounding the work.
