The project banknotes - faces of currencies

The single banknote comes and goes. Through very different hands, probably through the whole world. Its appearance changes in the process. Its feel. Also its value.
Diversity, color, symbolism - the culture and history of a country are manifested in the depictions and lettering on the banknotes, and monuments are erected to very different people for various reasons. The banknotes are pocket-sized works of art that are elaborated down to the smallest detail. Although they are subject to strict standards for security reasons, each banknote - visually defined by its front and back and only recognizable by watermarks or holograms visible against the light - is always unique.

Banknotes of current currencies fresh off the press, worn bills, valuable collector's items, historical commemorative banknotes, or special editions in small print runs: Stefan Kuhn wants to open up new perspectives with his photography, which shows banknotes - even those we use every day - in a way that even an intensive observer has never seen them before.

Kuhn combines the front, core, and reverse of a banknote in a single image, thus creating a symbiotic view that shows both the familiar and the unknown at a glance, which at the same time awakens memories and causes irritation.

"Things often look different when viewed from a distance. Considered from quite far away, things look very special". Since I added a photographic drone to my camera equipment, my view towards photography has totally changed and expanded. This is shown by one of my series called LAKESHORE OPERATIONS. From a bird's eye view and different positions and flight altitudes, I capture shoreline landscapes. Then I group the individual images into works consisting of several panels. The result is landscapes that, despite their restrained post-processing, oscillate between representationalism and abstraction. The viewer knows what he is seeing. Often, however, he hardly recognizes it. During his career, Kuhn´s work has already been honored by several national and international photography awards. Here is the list: 2023 NOMINEE | reFocus B&W Photo Contest | South Carolina, USA NOMINEE | 16th Int´l Color Awards | Los Angeles, USA 2022 NOMINEE | 15th Int´l Color Awards | Los Angeles, USA NOMINEE | 17th Black & White Spider Awards | Los Angeles, USA 2021 NOMINEE | 14th Int´l Color Awards | Los Angeles, USA 2020 NOMINEE | 15th Black & White Spider Awards | Los Angeles, USA NOMINEE | 13th Int´l Color Awards | Los Angeles, USA 2019 NOMINEE | 14th Black & White Spider Awards | Los Angeles, USA FINALIST | Sipa Drone Awards | Siena, Italy FINALIST | Arte Laguna Prize 18.
