Art Description

Photography: Cyanotype, Gold Leaf, Handmade Paper, Contact Print, Collage on Paper, Other.

Framed original, gold leaf cyanotype.
Hand-brush coated.
Hand finished with 24ct gold leaf.
Handprinted on handmade 100% recycled cotton rag paper.

This artwork was inspired by Mae Carol Jemison, an American engineer, physician and former NASA astronaut. She was the first African American woman to travel into space for eight days in 1992 aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour.

Hailing All Frequencies (Ode To Mae Jemison) was created by photographing a hand-cut collage of fashion style portraiture and planets made of chemigrams on photographic film. The negative was then contact printed onto handmade circular paper, brush coated with chemicals before drying in a dark room. Once exposed to light, the piece was washed to develop a cyan blue colour, pressed dry and then hand finished with 24ct gold leaf.

Dimensions - 300mm diameter (unframed) 385mm diameter (framed) x 30mm frame depth x 18mm frame face

Paper - Handprinted on handmade ivory recycled cotton rag paper: 320gsm / 100% Cotton Rag / Recycled / Acid Free / PH Neutral / Medium Rough

Mount - It is recommended to float mount this piece when framing.

Framing - This artwork is sold framed.

Frames are hand crafted to house the piece. Float mounted in a bespoke, handmade medium sized circular frame. The frame is a deep box frame, museum grade, UV protected, anti reflective glass fronted and with a smooth white finish.

This is taken from a series of cyanotypes based on females in history and mythology. Ones who particularly inspire me, deserve to be recognised and celebrated as powerful figures in time.

I want to visually tell a story with each piece to celebrate the lives of these amazing women using portraiture, symbolism and surrealism.

I expose all my pieces in natural light for up to a couple of weeks. Printing in all weather conditions, doing everything by eye and in the most organic way possible, this enable me to be at one with each piece I create.
