About The Artwork

an archival pigment print from a scanned B&W film negative image area approx 11 3/4" x 19" printed on 17" x 22" paper print #1 from Edition I of 25 prints + 2 A/P archival pigment prints 17"x22" size Printed on Epson Legacy Platine paper, a heavy weight paper with a smooth satin finish that closely emulates a traditional darkroom print Harley's grandfather purchased this car in 1949. He liked the Rocket 88 because he was born in '88 (1888), and because it was "the fastest thing going." Harley has hung on to it all these years -- he is quite a knowledgeable mechanic and restores cars for others. I was going to take a more formal portrait of Harley and his car, but he invited Ruby over to join us. The result is only sorta about cars. the photo is sold unframed

I have worked most of my professional life in the movies. That experience has left me with an instinct toward a narrative in my photos. Not always as a straightforward story, but at least as a structure to organize pieces of an image to work together. I look to elevate the mundane in my work, to create an image that rewards repeated visits. Much of my work is a continuing portrait of Los Angeles. I moved to Los Angeles as a young man to go to UCLA Film School, and it turned into a lifelong adventure. I have collected some in my self-published book “Small Pieces of Los Angeles briefly Illuminated”.
