About The Artwork

Cuba is Alive, exhibition 2010, London Havana dreams, 2005 Cuba is Alive documents an intimate and peaceful view of Cuban culture. The black and white photographs, captured with film, describe quietly beautiful landscapes and captures the Cuban people in the midst of their daily routine and seem refreshingly unperturbed by, almost unaware of, the artist's presence. Lena Konstantakou is preoccupied with ideas of passion, warmth and freedom, manifest most explicitly in her intimate portraits of the nation's citizens.

Lena Konstantakou grew up in Athens, Greece and moved to the UK to study Art & Design and Graphic Design. She worked for more than ten years for magazines and newspapers in London - amongst them the Daily Telegraph newspaper, where she worked as the Art Editor for the company's commercial department. Her photographic vision is an evolutionary journey from the busy London lifestyle to the 'quiet' and more peaceful neighbourhoods by the sea and close to nature. Lena Konstantakou’s ethereal photographs explore the intuitive connection between habitat, existence and wellbeing. Her work has evolved around the notion of how our environments and nature interfere and influence our emothional state. Drawing upon the concept of ‘the ordinary’, she captures imagery that signifies the importance of wonder, appreciation and connection; a celebration of an ordinary life.
