Description: We’ve all been there.  The proverbial doghouse is never a good place to be.  I’ve been fortunate to photograph a variety of wildlife in their natural habit and time and time again, I’ve observed incredibly human-like interactions amongst them.  Antarctica is home to tens of thousands of penguins.  With precious little time on the continent before my inflatable boat was scheduled to depart, I quickly surveyed the landscape for a shot that would capture the intimacy shared by these adorable social animals.  As soon as I saw these two, seemingly amid a tiff, I knew I had to capture the moment.  Instinctively I dropped down on to the snow to photograph them at their level and a split second later took the shot.  I could only wonder what had led up to this poignant moment in time.  Whatever the events, it seemed apt to caption the photo, “I’m Sorry.”

As though by a magnet, I’ve always felt the world pulling me, luring me to explore its mysteries and wonder. For a long time, I put my dreams on hold. Then one day in my practice as a radiologist, I met a patient whose journey would forever change my outlook. In the Fall of 2006, a man came to me with a nagging discomfort in his chest. At 38 years old, he was so young that I thought surely it must be something benign or otherwise inconsequential. In a matter of a few short hours, his CT scan revealed that he was suffering from terminal lung cancer. His story is a reminder to us all that each day must be viewed as a very special gift. Over the years I’ve witnessed hundreds of patients whose lives have been abruptly changed by a life-altering diagnosis. At times we may convince ourselves that we are immortal, and that cancer or some other catastrophe only affects others, but we have no guarantees in this life. Time is too short to get lost in a blur of days, weeks, and months. And so, I began to think more seriously about all those overseas adventures waiting for me, and soon enough, I grabbed my camera and voyaged to all 7 continents. During my travels, I’ve met people, young and old, who have lived amazing yet ordinary lives. Through thousands of interactions over four decades of travel, I’ve carefully honed my craft as a fine art portrait and landscape photographer. Central to my artistry is the firm belief that it’s more about what people feel when they view my images than it is about what they see. It’s about sharing the feelings I had when capturing the images and thereby creating emotional connections with the heart. These types of bonds are what gives my photography greater meaning, depth, and authenticity. In the end, it’s my hope for people to see something in my images that ultimately leads them to experience or perceive life differently. There are no rewinds in life, so find the time to discover your inspiration, explore the extraordinary, create the unimaginable, and then leave nothing on the table. ~ Harv Greenberg, M.D.
