Photography, 2014 From the series "Nostalghia" Numbered and handsigned on the back. With a certificate of authenticity. Limited edition of 7 + 2 AP Nostalghia is a series of portraits expressing feelings. Feelings of forlornness and solitude. Julia in these photographs is like a mirror of my state of mind. I chose Nostalgia as title of this series in order to make homage to the movie “Nostalghia” of the Russian director Andrey Tarkovsky and to his concept of art, explored in his book “Sculpting in Time”. Capturing feelings always goes along with telling stories. Behind every strong feeling there is a story. As individual as the photographer shooting the picture, and as individual as the viewer, identifying with the feeling inherent to the portrait. To Tarkovsky portraying has been pure observation. But the moments selected to be fixed in time to become eternal in art are a subjective choice. A portrait is like a mirror. I see what I feel and who I am in the portrayed. The rest I don’t perceive. Therefore each portrait is a double portrait, in this case a picture of Julia as well as a picture of my state of mind. The portrait is self-portrait too. To chose the appropriate titels for these portraits, I have been taking much care, because the titles are essential constitutional parts of the stories behind the feelings expressed in these portraits. Some titles are composed with fragments of Tarkovsky’s quotes, others are personal words or excerpts from the lyrics of songs, these pictures reminded me. Besides Tarkovsky’s art theory, my concept of portraying is inspired by Cindy Sherman’s film stills and by Italian author Luigi Pirandello's post-modernist approach on identity theory. Born in Germany, Martina Rall studied Italian and German literature as well as linguistics at the Universities of Tübingen and Parma/Italy (M.A.), and later on Fine Arts at the Academy of Arts in Nürtingen. She worked first as a concept and graphic designer before she devoted herself to her artistic career. As a multi-faceted artist, Martina Rall uses different techniques and materials in her artworks: graphics, paintings, photographs and writings. In Art she focuses on a mixed media series of Icon Self Portraits "Being Marilyn Monroe" and a photo series about “Artists in Action”, portraying European artists from various fields: musicians, authors and actors at work, to explore the creative process and the fascination of art. From Pop Art to Cindy Sherman photography or Russian cinematography, the inspiration behind her work combines an interesting blend of artistic expressions. Her mixed media selfportrait series “Being Marilyn Monroe. Icon Portraits” is influenced by the work of surrealist female artists like Frida Kahlo and Niki de St. Phalle as well as by Italian author Luigi Pirandello's post-modernist approach on identity theory. A series of coincidences brought Martina Rall to explore and re-think the inherent nature of her work and provides a practical meaning to the American poet William Carlos Williams' quote:' «The artist is always and forever painting only one thing: a self-portrait».
