Charles Perrault's fairy tale was the sanitised version of the original tale collected by the Italian poet Giambattista Basile and published in 1634 in his “Pentamerone”. In the original story a married King (not a Prince) finds the sleeping princess in the woods and rapes her, leaving her impregnated with twins.⠀
