I am particularly interested in the performance of femininity on screen. Who is permitted to be carefree? Who gets to be served, to lounge, to daydream, to be saved or courted? These permissions shape the character at the center of this work. The hotel operates as a manicured, liminal space beautif...

Faith Couch (b. 1997) is a Durham, North Carolina–born image maker and educator, whose work explores the relationship between memory, performance, intimacy, and the construction of Black visual life. Working across photography, installation, and cinematic image-making, Couch creates carefully staged yet emotionally lived environments that collapse distinctions between documentation and fabrication. Through self-depiction, casting, gesture, lighting, and production design, her practice interrogates how Black subjects inhabit, resist, and reimagine historical and contemporary image regimes. Her work is particularly invested in the haptic and multisensory possibilities of the image, exploring how photographs function as sites of embodiment, longing, spectacle, and collective remembrance.
Drawing from archival research, cinema, fashion photography, and vernacular imagery, Couch constructs photographs that feel suspended outside of fixed time. Her images foreground gestures of care, beauty, theatricality, rest, and desire, positioning both the mundane and the performative as terrains through which Black memory and futurity are negotiated.
Couch received her BFA in Photography from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2019 and holds an MFA in Photography from Yale University. Her work has been exhibited internationally at institutions and galleries including International Center of Photography, Aperture Foundation, Fotografiska, Saatchi Gallery, Queen's University Belfast, Les Rencontres d'Arles, and Nasher Museum of Art, among others. Alongside her fine art practice, Couch has worked editorially and commercially with publications including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Vogue. In 2024, she was named to Forbes 30 Under 30.
