This hand-printed photograph is a detail of the valve gear of a 100-tonne oily, steel machine, namely the Southern Railway Maunsell U-Class 2-6-0 Mogul No.1618. The 5x4 inch negative was made in 1981 on the Bluebell Railway in Sussex, England with a Japanese Wista large-format camera... the last prints being processed in 1999 before the negative was retired. I have six selenium-toned archival prints remaining from that final edition of twelve, the image measuring 30 x 24 cms on 36 x 29 cms Agfa Multicontrast Classic paper, all signed and dated in ink just outside the image area.

Abstract artist... stock photographer... writer... plant-based... fixie-cyclist... minimalist... and easy going, I studied Interior Design at art college in the 1960s, then worked in the TV and film industry for more than a decade, before turning to photography full-time. Later I published and edited specialist photographic magazines on darkroom techniques for several years and continue to supply digital images to the world's largest photo agency from my current location here in France. However, in a hard working retirement I spend much more time and energy as an abstract fine artist working with all media from old-fashioned paper, pencil and paint to creative collage and canvas.
