in april 2022, daniel michael kaiser was invited to travel to ny-ålesund, the northernmost settlement of the world, as an artistic guest of the german polar science institute. as guest on the sciencific station awipev he recorded sounds of ice, nature and science for his composition “white, vanishing“ for orchestra and field recordings. Additionally, he brought a 100-year-old pinhole camera. in preparation of his expedition he had learned about the work of herbert ponting, frank hurley, olaf bjaaland and other photographers from the heroic age of polar exploration. they went with scott, shackleton and amundsen and used similar techniques to bring home impressions of incomparable landscapes at extreme places of our world. but in 2022, kaisers pictures show landscapes vanishing. climate change has already taken its toll on the arctic archipelago of svalbard, where ny-ålesund is located. glacier fronts have receded for kilometres, thawing permafrost makes buildings insecure, landslides and avalanches increase in numbers. Kaiser’s analogue pictures, which give a historic impression, interfere with contemporary perception habits. they show a world which is permanently damaged by human-induced changes to the natural equilibrium. “what will have been“ presents a selection of these pictures. as an addendum and complement to his composition “white, vanishing“ these visual testaments of a journey to the high arctic illustrate daniel michael kaiser’s artistic reaction to climate change.
