Photography: Photo, Paper, Environmental on Paper.
"Materials" is a series of photographs taken in 2011. Pictured are wads of printed photos taken in downtown San Francisco on a Thursday in June of 2011.
Beginning the process physically, being in a city and taking a photograph, I then have a memory of that time and space. I was stopped, on foot, on the street, looked up and snapped a photograph. It was around 73 degrees and sunny. It was a Thursday.
The photograph that was captured is only a small piece of this memory and merely captures fragments of the true memory. Then these fragments are separated once more into ink on paper from a printer, turning the buildings from the memories back into new physical materials. A new space is then created with all of these new materials. Layers of memories. Of physicality and ambiguity. This new space then is captured in photograph where another separation occurs and the memory of this severely manipulated new space is captured away from the original memory of that Thursday in San Francisco.
The "Materials" series was the first in my exploration of circumstance's effect on a space and our memory of a space. This idea was later refined in my "Ford" series where I specifically explore perception of time in relation to velocity.
